  • 1 cup (100g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • A pinch of black pepper, freshly ground if possible
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for sealing wontons)
  • Cooking spray or a light brush of oil (for crisping)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, diced jalapenos, garlic powder, onion powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended and creamy (3-5 minutes).
  2. Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean surface, cover with a damp towel to prevent drying. Have beaten egg in a small bowl nearby for sealing.
  3. Place about 1 teaspoon (approximately 5g) of cheese filling in the center of each wrapper. Avoid overfilling.
  4. Dip fingertip in beaten egg and moisten edges of wrapper. Fold diagonally to form a triangle, pressing firmly to seal. Ensure no air pockets remain. If wrapper tears, start over with a new one.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray or brush both sides of wontons with cooking oil.
  7. Arrange wontons in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each for air circulation.
  8. Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Let wontons cool for 1-2 minutes before serving. Serve with ranch, sour cream, or favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Keep wonton wrappers covered with a damp towel to prevent drying. Do not overfill wontons to avoid bursting. Use beaten egg to seal edges tightly. Preheat air fryer for even crispiness. Flip wontons halfway through cooking. For vegan version, use dairy-free cream cheese and cheese alternatives and vegan wonton wrappers. For gluten-free, substitute wonton wrappers with rice paper sheets but texture will differ. If wontons aren’t crispy enough, increase cooking time by 1-2 minutes or re-spray with oil before the last minute. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket.
