These whimsical ghost meringue cookies are light, airy, and melt-in-your-mouth treats that are perfect for Halloween parties, trick-or-treat snacks, or creative gifts. They’re easy to make, naturally gluten-free, and low-fat, making them a delightful and festive addition to your Halloween celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large egg whites, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 225°F (110°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a clean, grease-free mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until they start to foam.
  3. Sprinkle in the cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form.
  4. Gradually add the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while beating on high speed. Continue until stiff peaks form and the meringue is glossy.
  5. Gently fold in the vanilla extract, being careful not to deflate the meringue.
  6. Transfer the meringue to a piping bag fitted with a round tip. Pipe ghost shapes onto the prepared baking sheets—start with a swirl at the base and taper off at the top for a ghostly effect.
  7. Place the cookies in the preheated oven and bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the meringues are firm and dry to the touch.
  8. Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool inside for about an hour before removing them.
  9. Use black gel food coloring, edible markers, or melted chocolate to draw spooky faces on your ghosts (optional).

Notes

[‘Always use room-temperature egg whites for better whipping.’, ‘Ensure your bowl and beaters are completely grease-free to avoid deflating the meringue.’, ‘Avoid making meringue on humid days as moisture can affect the texture.’, ‘Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.’, ‘If the cookies lose their crispness, reheat them in a 200°F (93°C) oven for 10-15 minutes.’]
