Delightfully creepy cookies shaped like witches’ fingers, perfect for Halloween parties or fun baking sessions with kids.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (125g) powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 2/3 cups (320g) all-purpose flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • Whole or halved almonds
  • Red food coloring or jam

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (226g) softened butter and 1 cup (125g) powdered sugar until light and fluffy—about 2 minutes.
  3. Beat in 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon almond extract until well-combined.
  4. Gradually add 2 2/3 cups (320g) all-purpose flour and a pinch of salt, mixing until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not sticky.
  5. Divide the dough into small portions and roll each into a finger shape. Chill the dough in the fridge for 15 minutes if it gets too soft.
  6. Use a butter knife to create knuckle wrinkles and indentations for a realistic look. Press a whole or halved almond into the tip of each finger to mimic a fingernail.
  7. Place the fingers on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a bit of space between them, and bake for 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Use a small brush to apply red food coloring or jam around the base of the almond to mimic blood.

Notes

[‘Chill the dough for 15-20 minutes if it feels sticky or soft.’, ‘Don’t overbake the cookies; they should be tender and buttery.’, ‘Get creative with shaping for ultra-realistic fingers.’, ‘Use pumpkin seeds or pecans as alternatives for almonds.’, ‘Ensure jam used for decoration is thick to avoid running.’]
