Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (320g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Red and pink heart-shaped sprinkles or sanding sugar (optional)
  • 1 ½ cups (225g) assorted heart-shaped chocolates or candy melts
  • 1 cup (150g) gummy hearts or fruit-flavored gummies
  • ½ cup (60g) mini peppermint candies or crushed candy canes
  • 1 cup (150g) homemade fudge bites or store-bought fudge squares
  • 1 cup (50g) pretzel sticks or mini pretzels (optional)
  • ½ cup (70g) roasted nuts, lightly salted (almonds, pecans, or walnuts) (optional)
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh berries like raspberries or strawberries (optional)
  • Edible flowers or mint leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (227g) softened unsalted butter and ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar using a hand or stand mixer on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in 2 large room-temperature eggs, one at a time, then add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until well combined and smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ½ cups (320g) all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour and gently knead by hand.
  5. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about ¼ inch (6mm) thickness.
  7. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart.
  8. Sprinkle red and pink sanding sugar or heart sprinkles on top of cookies for decoration.
  9. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes until edges are just golden. Remove and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. On a large wooden board or platter, arrange the cookies as the centerpiece. Surround with heart-shaped chocolates, gummy hearts, crushed peppermint candies, fudge bites, pretzels, and nuts.
  11. Fill any gaps with fresh berries and edible flowers if desired.
  12. Optionally, add small bowls of dipping sauces like chocolate ganache or caramel.
  13. Serve the dessert board at room temperature.

Notes

Chill dough for at least 1 hour to prevent cookies from spreading. Use room temperature eggs for better dough consistency. Bake cookies until edges just turn golden to avoid dryness. Store cookies and candies separately to maintain texture. Cookies can be baked a day ahead and stored in an airtight container. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend and gluten-free candies. For vegan, substitute butter with dairy-free butter or coconut oil and use flax eggs and vegan candies.
