A sweet and savory twist on classic baklava, featuring crispy bacon, maple syrup, and flaky phyllo dough for a unique flavor explosion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Phyllo Dough (thawed according to package instructions)
  • Unsalted Butter (melted)
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup chopped pistachios
  • 1/2 cup crispy bacon bits
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine walnuts, pistachios, bacon bits, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir well and set aside.
  3. Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp towel to prevent drying out.
  4. Brush the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut and bacon mixture evenly over the phyllo. Add 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then another layer of filling. Repeat until all filling is used, finishing with 10 layers of phyllo on top.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut the layered baklava into diamond or square shapes, ensuring cuts go all the way through.
  7. Bake the baklava for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  8. While the baklava bakes, combine maple syrup, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the entire dish. Let it soak for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Notes

Work quickly with phyllo dough to prevent drying out. Generously brush each layer with butter for a crispy texture. Let the baklava rest overnight for the best flavor.
