Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for mushroom gravy)
  • 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for tomato herb gravy)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for spicy peppercorn gravy)
  • 1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine (optional)
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the peeled potatoes in salted water for 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain and let cool slightly.
  2. Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, Parmesan (if using), garlic powder, salt, and pepper until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  3. Roll the potato mixture into small balls (about 1-inch in diameter). Dip each ball into the beaten egg, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potato shots in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
  5. Prepare the Mushroom Gravy: Melt butter in a saucepan, sauté mushrooms until softened, then whisk in flour. Gradually add broth and cream, stirring until thickened.
  6. Prepare the Tomato Herb Gravy: Heat olive oil, sauté onions and garlic, then add tomato puree and herbs. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Prepare the Spicy Peppercorn Gravy: Melt butter in a saucepan, add crushed peppercorns, then whisk in flour. Gradually add broth and wine, cooking until thickened.
  8. Arrange the potato shots on a platter and serve the gravies in individual ramekins for dipping.
