A nostalgic and comforting grilled cheese sandwich featuring sharp cheddar and crisp apple slices, delivering a perfect balance of sweet and savory with a crispy buttery crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sturdy artisan-style bread (sourdough or country loaf)
  • 6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded (Cabot or Tillamook recommended)
  • 1 medium Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Optional: pinch of cinnamon or drizzle of honey

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the Granny Smith apple, removing seeds but keeping the peel on.
  2. Slice or shred the sharp cheddar cheese.
  3. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  4. Place two bread slices butter-side down on a clean surface.
  5. Layer evenly with sharp cheddar cheese, then arrange apple slices on top.
  6. Add a pinch of cinnamon or drizzle honey if desired.
  7. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
  8. Warm a nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-low heat.
  9. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook slowly for 3-4 minutes on the first side until golden and crispy.
  10. Flip carefully and cook another 3-4 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula to encourage even browning and melting.
  11. If cheese isn’t melted but bread is browning too fast, lower heat and cover pan briefly to trap heat.
  12. Remove sandwiches from skillet, let cool for a minute, then slice diagonally and serve immediately.

Notes

Use firm, crisp apples like Granny Smith to avoid sogginess. Butter the bread generously for a golden crust. Cook over medium-low heat to melt cheese without burning bread. Cover pan briefly if cheese isn’t melting. Thin apple slices help with flipping. For vegan or gluten-free versions, substitute ingredients accordingly.
