These comforting funeral sandwiches are warm, gooey ham and cheese sliders with a buttery, tangy glaze, perfect for quick meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls (King’s Hawaiian recommended)
  • 1 pound sliced deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced (or Gruyère for nuttier flavor)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Slice the Hawaiian rolls horizontally in half. If pre-sliced, separate the top and bottom halves gently.
  3. On the bottom half of the rolls, evenly layer the sliced ham.
  4. Add the Swiss cheese slices on top of the ham, covering all areas for even melting.
  5. Place the top halves of the rolls back onto the layered ham and cheese to form sandwiches.
  6. In a small bowl, combine melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper if using. Whisk until well blended.
  7. Brush the glaze generously over the tops of the rolls using a basting brush or spoon.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to keep the sliders moist while baking.
  9. Bake for 15 minutes to warm the ham and melt the cheese.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for another 5 minutes to let the tops get golden and slightly crisp.
  11. Let cool for a few minutes before serving to avoid burns and make slicing easier.

Notes

Use fresh rolls for best texture. Don’t overload with ham or cheese to avoid sogginess. Whisk glaze well to distribute poppy seeds evenly. Cover with foil during baking to keep sliders moist, remove foil at the end for crisp tops. Warm thick-sliced ham before layering for better cheese melt. Can substitute turkey or roast beef for ham, and cheddar or provolone for cheese. For dairy-free, use plant-based cheese and butter alternatives.
